There are so many 'catch-22s' when you are poor.
My friend is trying to start a business.
This business can pull her out of poverty.
But, she doesn't have the start up funds
to buy the supplies to make the products.
So, we found a nonprofit that does micro loans.
This seemed an incredible opportunity!
Then, we learned that to qualify for the micro loan,
you can't have any outstanding debt.
The problem is,
A few weeks back, through a series of
unfortunate events, she went into debt
with her bank to the tune of $200.
Her choice now...
Pay the bank off or eat or pay for her van.
hmmm...
So, the bank is waiting,
and dinner is Top Rammen - again.
And, her van payment is made.
Because, if she doesn't pay for the van,
they will lose their 'home-on-wheels'.
And the 'Poorest-of-Poor' can't access
the very resources that were designed
to assist them to find their way
out of poverty.
